The Heart Of Darkness

In the silent Heart of Darkness

Where I'd never hoped to go,

I could hear the angels singing

Songs I did not want to know.

In the icy Heart of Darkness

You must settle every bet.

It's too late to beg forgiveness.

It's too late for vain regret.

I could hear a church bell ringing

As the lights dimmed in the room.

And the choirs of angels singing

Hymns of hopelessness and doom.

Saw the Lord in all His glory

Read the Book of Life in rage.

Then the angels sang my story

And the Lord tore out my page.

In the empty Heart of Darkness

Silence cuts you like a knife.

You will clearly see your future

And the truth about your life.

As the bells rang in the steeple,

Icy fingers clutched my heart.

I had meant to love the people,

But I just forgot to start.

I had meant to fool the sentry

And outwit the angel bands,

When the Lord ripped out my entry,

First He spat upon His hands.
